Traduire l’argot français : de Boris Vian à Morgan Sportès
Journal Title: Argotica - Year 2014, Vol 0, Issue 1
Abstract
Slang is certainly one of the aspects of language that are the most difficult to translate, even if we do not agree with those who consider language and slang as untranslatable. In this article, we will compare the Hungarian translations of Boris Vian’s last novel published under the pseudonym of Vernon Sullivan, Elles se rendent pas compte (‘They Do Not Realize’) with Morgan Sportès’ true crime novel, Tout, tout de suite (‘Straight Away’). The main difficulty for the translator consisted in the first case in expressing in contemporary Hungarian the essentially playful French general slang used by Vian towards the end of the 1940’s, while in the second case it lied in the need to finding a Hungarian equivalent for today’s français contemporain des cités.
