Traduire l’écart langagier. La traduction du verlan français en grec
Journal Title: Argotica - Year 2014, Vol 0, Issue 1
Abstract
Verlan, this constitutive part of the langue des jeunes/des cités, is a distinctive feature of a sociolect that is more and more assimilated to modern French language, and largely diffused by the French mass media. In this study, I will show how Greek students studying French Language and Literature at Aristotle University seem not to be familiar with this sociolect before their academic studies. They consider the continuous change of the verlan form (reverlanisations) a major difficulty in its learning. Another finding demonstrates that Greek students, when translating verlan, seem to opt for semantic isotopias, which they believe to be culturally and stylistically closer to the register of French verlan. Standard French remains the mediator in the cognitive procedure of transla-tion between the source text (verlan) and the target text (Greek). Finally, Greek students pay particular attention to the register that should be reflected in the target text.
