Les Belles-Soeurs sans surtitres à Paris ? Comprendre ou ne pas comprendre le joual

Abstract
This article focuses on the evolution of the linguistic debate surrounding the showing of the Quebecois play Les Belles-Soeurs in France, by analysing the interdiscourse on Joual in press reviews written in 2012, and comparing it with comments from journalists who saw Tremblay’s play in Paris in 1973. The second aim of the study is to consider the relevance of surtitles when a play is written in the language of the intended audience but is nevertheless difficult for spectators to understand because of its diatopic variant. The interdiscourse on Joual analysis reveals that the debate was partly emotional and that this affective component, underlying the discourse of the various parties involved may have influenced the comments of the printed-press journalists. The author concludes that it might be worthwhile to recognize the value of intralingual surtitling, considering different avenues that it would create for theatrical performances at different levels: dramatic, aesthetic and intercultural.
