Works of art are an important part of the culture of the people, their spiritual wealth. Information about cultural values is recorded and accumulated through the language. The lexical system of language is, to the greatest extent, determined by the categories of the material and spiritual world related to the activities of people. Language is one of the elements of cultural environment, which is simultaneously the result of the development of civilization, a means of fixing its history and one of the means of its formation, and first of all special vocabulary, that is the aggregate of lexical units (primarily terms) of special fields of knowledge. Relying on the definitions of well-known linguists, our own definition of the “painting term” is given in the article. In addition, the peculiarities of usage of each translation method, namely, transcription and transliteration, calque, descriptive translation, syntactic assimilation (literal translation) under study are revealed. All examples, that are given in the article, represent the idea that art terminology is a unique language layer which reflects cultural and historic inheritance of people, so its formation depends on many factors as well as different languages. That’s why in the process of translation we shouldn’t pay attention only to dictionary definitions. To choose the only possible variant it is necessary to take into account the context itself and certainly the best way is to consult a specialist from art sphere. A great influence on the quality of translation is provided by the knowledge of situational realities. A translation analysis of texts of this subject will be accompanied by a study of relevant topics in order to find the translation invariant. Translation of this type of vocabulary will be accompanied by an analysis of the material, thus the translation process will be at the intersection of a variety of disciplines such as history, sociology, cultural studies, social studies, art, natural sciences and a number of other subjects.
