ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE GORODYSHCHE I NEAR LUTSK: ATTEMPT OF COMPREHENSIVE ANALYSIS OF RESEARCH

Abstract

Complex of sites located near village Gorodyshche I (Lutsk district, Volhyn region) is described at the article on the basis of analysis of previous publications and archaeological research conducted by the author. Issues of complex study of the site are considered; its chronological position and social interpretation are corrected. Researches cover group of sites, situated to the south and south-west from Gorodyshche I, Lutsk district, Volhyn region including hill-fort, surrounding village, two groups of barrows and arable lands. V. Antonovych, K. Melnyk-Antonovych, M. Kuchera and V. Baiuk examined this complex of sites; materials are also presented at generalizing works written by O. Motsia, M. Kuchynko and S. Panyshko. As a result of analysis of previous studies and collected archaeological data conclusion can be made that hill-fort was built on the place of more ancient settlement, and its original fortifications were built not earlier than X century. Although original defensive structures are traced by trench only on western edge of the site, it is natural to consider their continuation throughout the whole perimeter. Fortification existed during entire Early Middle Ages. However, intensity of settlement here was largest in X–XI centuries. At this time, adjoining village served as suburb of the hill-fort. It is traced by similarity of materials found there. Representatives of higher social strata were buried on barrow cemetery situated nearby. Hill-fort was top up not earlier than XVI century, because of which its surface gained stitch shape with flat surface, covered remains of rampart and cultural layer from Early Medieval Ages. As for social interpretation of this hill-fort during Middle Ages, considering its location, size and finding of horseshoe fibula made of non-ferrous metal, can be assumed that it was center of princely authority and fortress on outskirts of Luchesk (like early-feudal knight’s castle).
