DEVELOPMENT OF SENSITIVITY TO THE MARKERS OF SEXUAL DIMORPHISM IN THE HUMAN FACE: IS ANGELINA JOLIE AS FEMININE AND BEAUTIFUL AND BRAD PITT AS MASCULINE AND HANDSOME FOR CHILDREN AS THEY ARE FOR ADULTS?

Journal Title: Educational Psychology - Year 2013, Vol 45, Issue 3

Abstract

Abstract: In research inspired by evolutionism, many diverse “elements” of human beauty (“attractiveness markers”) were identified. According to the radical version of evolutionism, it should be expected that each of them is/should be “innate,” thus historically, geo-culturally and developmentally universal. In a study on 320 subjects of both sexes (7, 9 and 12-year-old children, and young adults), the developmental universality of sensitivity to sexual dimorphism was investigated. It was found that sexual dimorphism apparent in facial features did not meet the criterion of developmental universality. The degrees of “femininity” and “masculinity” indicated by 7-year-olds were almost identical in adults. However, in children’s judgments, there was no significant relation between the degree of dimorphism and the assessment of facial attractiveness, while this relation was significant and strong in adults. Probably, sensitivity to sexual dimorphism is not completely “innate,” but is “formed” (or “revealed”?) at later development stages – at least for the aspect of this sensitivity that is responsible for the “attractive dimorphism” effect.
