EXPLICIT INDICATORS FOR TRANSITION FROM PROPER NOUNS TO COMMON ONES IN THE PUBLICISTIC TEXT
Journal Title: Слов’янський збірник - Year 2014, Vol 0, Issue 18
Abstract
This article deals with some cases of situational (at the speech level) transition from proper nouns to common ones and focuses on explicit means that signal the phenomenon. They are: pluralizing the original proper noun, being written with a small letter, using differential definitions (which distinguish a semantically transformed word from a proper name) and identifying definitions (which introduce a semantically transformed word into the class of such phenomena), using inverted commas, fusing and blending words, and combining all these means. The relevance of the reasearch is closely connected with the active processes of proper noun semantic changes in modern Ukrainian publicistic texts. We identified external manifestations that are generated by the proper noun semantic transformation, determined frequency of these explicit features and the dominance of some of them, traced formal features that can be used simultaneously for the situational transition from proper nouns to common ones.
