PAVLO ZHITETSKIY AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF HUMANITARIAN THOUGHT IN XIX CENTURY

Journal Title: Мова - Year 2014, Vol 0, Issue 21

Abstract

The article is devoted to one of the questions in the history of Russian linguistics, namely the updating of Pavlo Zhitetskiy’s scientific heritage and his role in the development of the theoretical foundations of the study of closely related languages in general and modern Russian studies and Ukrainian studies in particular. Humboldt’s ideas had a serious impact on the formation of Zhitetskiy’s scientific views. The concept by Mikhail Maksimovic of Russian and Ukrainian languages’ relationship was close to views of Pavlo Zhitetskiy. The I. I. Sreznevskiy’s idea of having to learn a language closely related to the history of the people, its dialects and the modern speech had also a strong influence on the formation of Zhitetskiy’s scientific views. Scholarly works by Aleksandr Pypin, Ivan Franko, Alexey Shakhmatov influenced also in shaping of Zhitetskiy’s worldview. In 1877, Pavlo Zhitetskiy was awarded the Uvarov Prize by the Russian Academy of Sciences for the «Narys zvukovoy istoriyi Malorus’kogo narichchia» («Essay on the history of the sound system of Little Russian dialect»). The problem of historical phonetics of the Ukrainian language was first considered in this work. Aleksandr Potebnya, Ignatiy (Vatroslav) Jagić, Vladimir Peretz and many other contemporaries of P. Zhitetskiy devoted a number of their works to analysis of his scientific activity.
