Port, border and defense in Trujillo (Honduras), 1502-1642
Journal Title: Revista de Estudios Marítimos y Sociales - Year 2009, Vol 2, Issue 2
Abstract
The Trujillo port on the eastern coast of the Honduran Caribbean was established in 1525 by the conquerors groups led from New Spain by Hernan Cortez. At the moment of the Spanish contact, the Pre-colombine scenery was flled with multiple cultures; Mayans, Payans or Pech, Xicaques or Tolupanes. This is the reason why the establishment of this site was not decided by chance; the Hispanics noticed an endless number of positive conditions like population, resources, climate, and other suitable means for establishing a port. But in the mid-sixteenth century, Trujillo started getting relegated by other cities and ports located in the west of Honduras and inland regions of the Guatemalan Kingdom. That is why, since the early colonial stage, Trujillo and its jurisdiction became a border, defense and entering area towards the conquest and colonization of other territories to the east of Honduras.
