Journal Title: Revista de Estudios Marítimos y Sociales - Year 2008, Vol 1, Issue 1
Abstract
This article explores the labor relations in the fsh-canning industry in the North West of Spain, mainly Galicia, which was the most important producer and exporter region in Spain between 1880 and 1936. This period was characterized by the formation, modernization and consolidation of the fsh-canning sector. The article focuses on the influence of technological change in the labor market and in the evolution of the labor contracts. Labor conflicts were due to changes on labor conditions (wages, working hours) and mechanization process. The adoption of new machines and new work organization implied the substitution of skilled men for women and teenagers. The article analyzes the common problems of men and women, but also differentiates the specifc labor conflicts that affected only women or men, taking into account that male unions had more bargaining power than female unions in Spain and in all the main canning countries.
