The cerebellar deficit hypothesis in the etiology of developmental dyslexia - Diagnostic and therapeutic implications

Abstract

Significant changes have taken place in the views on the essence, etiology and pathomechanism of developmental dyslexia over the last decades. They result from the rapid development of science, especially in the area of neurology, psychophysiology and biology. The article presents one of contemporary concepts of dyslexia, i.e. the cerebellar deficit hypothesis, understood as a neurodevelopmental disorder. The hypothesis presented is intriguing and promising, and is empirically validated on a continuous basis. The article aims to show its scientific value: It refers to research findings to date and considers the possibility of using certain methods of learning about and stimulating brain function in diagnostic and therapeutic practice as a way to broaden diagnosticians' and therapist' skills.
