Un nouvel argot : la langue bleue

Journal Title: Argotica - Year 2017, Vol 0, Issue 1

Abstract

A new slang: the “blue language” Although the topic is as vast as the sea, with the reserve of advanced checking’s – in French, one only finds five serious books on “marine linguistics”, i.e. dealing with sailors’ language. “Slang scientist” (he has a PhD in linguistics from the University Paris Descartes) and very fond of marine and sailing, the author examines and tries to present their qualities and flaws objectively. None of these books being written by (a) linguist(s), it would be too easy to criticize their author(s). Rather than doing so, the author prefers demonstrating that this (French) “lingua marinæ” is far more than a simple slang, as any slang-specialists mean it, but rather a “blue language” that has nothing to envy to the “green language” [common French phrase meaning “slang”] first attested in 1852.
